No Belief Necessary
Buddhism does not refer to a supreme deity.
I found this perfectly matched my need. I no longer believe in a God as defined by most accepted holy books, such as the Koran, Bible, or Talmud. I try not to have beliefs in anything.
The closest I can come to a definition of God is the Universe. It is perfectly ordered and doesn’t engage in jealousy or punishment. It’s not personal and therefore does not need to be known. The average human can’t see its organizing principles (gravity, relativity, sub-particle physics). It also has no ministerial personages to require anyone to behave in a certain way.
I’m comfortable with the position that God, Jehovah, Allah, The One Most High, etc., are all names created by man to refer to something higher than themselves; an eternal being they either hope exists according to their preferences, or expect others will believe exists so exerting some form of control over them is possible.
There is no proof of deity anywhere. No one can point to purely physical evidence that God exists. Numerous sects and religions will point to what they believe is irrefutable evidence of God’s existence, specifically, the Universe and all of the created world.
Still, their positions and “proofs” are founded on their belief systems and traditions.
To place my faith in the existence of a deity that is defined by others, and in vastly different definitions is not something I can do in good conscience.
